Description
The Groynes is dog park ‘heaven’. It’s a large area, properly fenced, and divided into half a dozen separate sections: a barbecue and picnic area (with an electric barbecue), a couple of open spaces, several spaces with concrete or tree-trunk based dog agility courses, large and small.
Double gates allow a safety zone for entering and leaving with your dog.
There are cylinders attached to many posts where you can grab a free poop bag, and numerous rubbish bins — many shaped like dogs.
A drinking fountain for people includes a bowl near the ground for the dogs. There are plenty of benches and picnic tables.
Signage is very clear, so you know where you can have your dog off-leash and where it must be on-leash again. A long walk along the Otukaikino track is available for dogs on-leash.
There’s access to the Otukaikino river, though that’s not totally fenced in.
On our visit we did see a very small dog pop through the fence between off-leash areas, but the off-leash area is very secure.
This is area #02 on the City Council map (warning: huge file): Groynes – Waimairi Walkway (17.7Mb PDF).
Terrain
- Road to flat off-leash area
- Grassy, with some trees
- Water: Otukaikino river is accessible through a dog-proof gate.
Delights
- Total confidence that your dog is safe.
Dangers
- None: this park is designed for dogs.
Cautions
- Very small dogs could get through the larger mesh of the fences between off-leash areas.
