Dogs wipe out Little Blue Penguin colony on the West Coast

Dogs can destroy whole penguin colonies really quickly. Please make sure to keep your dog on the lead where penguins are, and watch them carefully too.

Around Wellington we have many coastal sites where Little Blue Penguins nest. In these areas we need to be specially careful not to let our dogs off the lead and to watch them carefully even on the lead. Otherwise this can happen:

More than 15 blue penguins have been killed on the South Island’s West Coast in a dog attack that is likely to have wiped out an entire colony.

Please, take care and help other owners understand they need to take care too. We don’t want to harm these birds.
