Keep an eye on your dog around the South Coast – for the sake of the penguins

Little blue penguins live here.

Penguins have a very strong smell and are very attractive to dogs. Small dogs can even get inside their nest boxes and destroy the eggs and kill the chicks. Please don’t take your dog onto beaches where penguins nest, and watch them off-leash on Lyall Bay beach.

Balaena Bay Beach

Balaena Bay beach.

This is the stretch of beach to both sides of the toilets and changing sheds in Balaena Bay along the coast between Oriental Bay and Evans Bay, Wellington, New Zealand. Hours of use are restricted and dogs must be on-leash. Penguins nest in this area so take particular care not to disturb them.
