Houghton Bay beach is a small beach on Wellington’s South Coast. It’s suitable for surfing but not swimming because of the undertow.

  • A small beach
  • Partially fenced
  • Space for half a dozen cars off the road, by the entrance. Or park at Princess Bay next door where’s there’s plenty of room and then walk a few metres round the coast.

Description

Houghton Bay beach lies at the bottom of Houghton Bay Road on the South Coast in Wellington, New Zealand.

Although popular with surfers it’s not very busy as Princess Bay (no dogs allowed) right next door is much better for swimming, diving and family activities.

Access to the beach is down a sandy path and set of steps.

Dangers

  • There are no Brodifacoum poison warning signs, but it is widespread in Wellington.
  • The beach has a notorious undertow.
  • In a Southerly the beach can be quite wild.

Cautions

  • May be windy.
  • Stormwater drain.
  • Dogs could run out to the nearby road.

Road access

Road access via Houghton Bay Road or the Esplanade between Lyall Bay and Island Bay.
