Description

Te Ahumairangi was formerly known as Tinakori Hill. There are numerous tracks on its slopes, but the off-leash area is along the ridge. Keep reading: there may be a couple of other off-leash areas too.

There are several entrances to this off-leash area — an easy way in is from the Lookout. There’s a gentle climb along a shingled track from the Lookout to the track, then a formed path along the ridge.

Apart from a confusing sign at the Lookout, the actual off-leash area isn’t marked on the spot.

There are some wider grassy areas, and plenty of trees and bushes by the track.

Actually I hope to clarify with the Council exactly where the off-leash area is. Their PDF map may be out of date and doesn’t really correspond well with the sign at the Lookout. The sign at the Lookout also confusingly points out one (or more) off-leash areas while saying dogs must be on-leash.

Ahumairangi confusion - are these also off-leash areas?

At various points along the track there are fantastic views over Wellington and to the West.

The tracks are popular with walkers, runners and mountain bikes.

It was a still day when we visited, but given its location at the top of a hill it’s probably pretty tricky on a windy day. Do you visit this off-leash area? Please tell us more about it.

This is area #21 on the City Council map: Top of Te Ahumairangi (Tinakori Hill) (132Kb PDF).

Terrain

  • Fairly flat
  • Along the ridge of a hill
  • Paths, grass
  • Water: no

Delights

  • Views over Wellington.

Dangers

Cautions

  • Watch out for gales.

Road access

There is road access to several entrances for the off-leash area. The first time we visited (in 2009) we became totally lost as the entrances weren’t well signposted.

An easy access is from Orangi-Kaupapa Road between Bedford St and Puketiro Ave. What looks like a private driveway (though signposted) leads up to the Lookout where there’s parking for half a dozen cars. Do you visit this off-leash area? Please tell us more about how to get there.
